Users can now upload their own custom emojis to use in messages and reactions due to a new feature added by Microsoft to its Teams communication platform.

Microsoft says the new custom emoji will be available to try through a Teams public test next month, with the goal of assisting Teams users in working together and expressing themselves “in a more creative and authentic way.” In order to help express.

Businesses using Teams can limit which users can upload or delete custom emojis, or they can turn the feature off completely. Custom emojis can only be visible within the same organisation domain once they are uploaded to Teams. Microsoft says that custom emoji will be available to everyone sometime in July.

The news comes three months after Microsoft employees found an early version of the feature on an internal Teams build. They discovered an animated emoji of the widely recognised Pepe the Frog character in some responses and messages.

At the moment, Microsoft Teams only works with official Unicode emojis. These are the standard set of public domain emojis that most smartphones and social media sites accept.

Microsoft is very late to the party when it comes to custom emojis compared to other messaging apps. Since years ago, this has been a big part of Slack and Discord. In 2022, Google Chat added a similar feature for Workspace users.
